If you're pillow is so old you can't remember its original shape, it is time for a new one. But how do you know which is the best pillow for you? Think about how you sleep. If you spend most of the night on your side, you will want to choose a firm yet fluffy pillow to keep your neck in line with your head, shoulders and spine.
When perfectly aligned, the ear of a side sleeper should be in line with his or her shoulder. If your head is bent in the wrong direction you will wake up with neck pain and cramping. Thankfully, there are pillows made with side sleepers in mind!
Because head and neck support is so important, most side sleepers prefer medium to medium firm pillows. The firmness allows for an even weight distribution throughout the body. A firm pillow doesn't mean you'll feel like you're sleeping on rocks though! Firm pillows are denser than plush ones to add support. Whether you choose down, synthetic down, fabric or memory foam, a firm pillow does not mean an uncomfortable one.
Many side sleepers choose to use a body pillow, which adds spinal support at the knees, as well. Body pillows are particularly helpful for pregnant women as they give extra support to the stomach.
Memory foam offers superior support to most other pillow types. The visco-elastic foam works with your body heat to mold into the shape of your body, literally letting you sleep on the perfectly shaped pillow night after night. And memory foam lasts longer than down or fabric pillows, as well! Memory foam pillows may cost more at the time of purchase, but those extra years of life make it a better investment than other types of pillow.
